UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETING THE CULTURAL
TRADITIONS OF THE GREAT LAKES
This session is designed to explore the growing
interest in the arts and cultural life of the diverse peoples,
traditions, and customs of the Great Lakes region and the
region's interaction with the world. The session will be led
by Dr. C. Kurt Dewhurst, the Director of the Center for Great
Lakes Culture at Michigan State University. Participants will
be encouraged to share their knowledge and interests in emerging
research, collections, and programs that will contribute to
the understanding and interpretation of the cultures of the
Great Lakes and the work of the Center for Great Lakes Culture.
Among the questions to be addressed include: What are some
of the most pressing issues that are impacting the changing
cultures of our region? What strategies can be developed to
create new partnerships within the region to support research
and public programming on the arts and cultural life of the
region? How can the CGLC assist in fostering electronic as
well as other forms of commications between scholars, teachers,
and the public sector interested in the region?

FOSTERING A FUTURE FOR THE STUDY AND
PRESENTATION OF GREAT LAKES CULTURE
Conference participants are invited to take
part in an informal breakfast discussion with Advisors to
the Center for Great Lake Culture on the future role the Center
can play to foster increased scholarly activity and public
programming on the arts and cultures of the region. Among
the topics will be discussion of the CGLC Gatherings Program,
Fellowship Program, Awards Program, and the plans for the
next conference with a theme dedicated to Great Lakes Foodways.
Conference participants are encouraged to share ideas fo collaborations
and individual projects related to Great Lakes arts and cultures.
This session will be led by Dr. C. Kurt Dewhurst, Director
of the Center for Great Lakes Culture, Michigan State University.
