Workshop/conference activities and public performances
will be held on Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday. CGLC
Advisors and others doing work in the area of Great Lakes
Culture, and those who have an interest in being more involved
with the Center, are invited to participate also in the annual
CGLC meeting, bookended around the conference (Friday
noon - 2:30 and Sunday
8:30-10:30, both at the Cleveland Hyatt Regency).

Great Lakes Maritime
Conference Activities:
Friday Highlights:
Events, conducted in partnership with the Association for
Great Lakes Maritime History, will include:
• an interpretive boat tour down the historic Cuyahoga
River (3:00-6:00 p.m.),
• reception, tour, and a traditonal yellow perch fish
fry dinner aboard the steamship William G. Mather,
• a program panel about challenges and successes
of preserving Great Lakes maritime resources and culture (preserving
tangible elements, intangible stories and folklife, and presenting
history and culture to the public).
Saturday Highlights:
The Saturday morning program (8:00-noon) will feature:
• K-12 teacher workshop track on maritime-themed curriculum
development
- how to use vessel-based field trips to teach
and enhances science and social studies content (Steve Stewart,
Michigan Sea Grant Extension, Great Lakes Education Program
- using local maritime resources to develop
relevant experiences to meet curriculum objectives (Paula
Thompson, teacher, Alpena, MI)
- exploring a smorgasbord of ways to use music
and maritime themes to excite your students about required
subjects (Lee
Murdock, Dan
Hall, Foster Brown)
• Scholar-practitioner track to explore
Great Lakes maritime themes and ways to preserve the culture
- Great Lakes authors share their
explorations and writings across a range of topics (authors
include Hawk Tolson on Isle Royale fishing boats; Pat Mullen
on Lake Erie fishermen; Joe Grimm and Lee Murdock on Great
Lakes music)
- Diverse people -- managers, business folks,
museum staff, and scholars -- explore the challenges of
preserving Great Lakes resources, stories and landscapes.
• Presenters, performers and publishers
will display (and sell) a variety of products reflecting Great
Lakes history and culture
The
Saturday afternoon program at the Hyatt Regency Arade (to
which the general public is invited) will feature:
• 1:00 – 2:50: Musical performances and stories
presented by three well-known Great Lakes musicians: Lee
Murdock (balladeer); Dan
Hall (who works with youth and community groups to write
and perform their own music and stories); Foster Brown (Cleveland
Metroparks, who works with local groups and performs, including
canal era music)
The musical session will be followed by (2:50
- 5:00):
• Presentation of the 2003 annual CGLC Excellence Awards
• Presentation of NEXT STOP, FREEDOM!, a costumed storytelling
program about the maritime role in the Underground Railroad,
performed by Bette Lou Higgins, produced by Eden Valley Enterprises
• Capstone session on “What Exactly IS Great Lakes
Culture?”, by Dr. Pat Mullen, Ohio State University
