The Midwest Association for the Canadian Studies
Canada's
Century?
The
20th century was supposed to be "Canada's Century." As
we now move into the 21st Century --and a new Millennium-- was the
promise of the 20th Century fulfilled? --will the 21st be Canada's
Century?
Please
join us for our Midwest Association for Canadian Studies (MWACS)
10th Biennial Conference as we as we explore "Canada's Century?"
The conference will be held October 10-13, 2002 at the Marriott
Hotel in East Lansing, Michigan.
We
have arranged for the President of the Great Lakes Commission, Michael
Donahue, to be our keynote speaker. Dr. Donahue will talk about
the current state of the Great Lakes. We are also going to be viewing
the film Redskins, Tricksters, and Puppy Stew by Drew Hayden Taylor,
the award-winning playwright, essayist, and film director. Drew
Taylor is a member of the Curve Lake First Nation in Ontario, and
he will be joining us at the conference to discuss the film and
"the healing power of Aboriginal humor."
The
MWACS Conference offers a supportive atmosphere for all presenters
and especially encourages "works in progress" and is pleased
to receive proposals from graduate students. We wish to support
a wide range of presentations on all aspects of Canadian Culture.
In previous conferences we have had sessions on History, Geography,
Fisheries, Wildlife, Tourism, Aboriginal People, the Press, Quebec,
Government, Literature, etc. For this conference, we encourage papers
that will explore these issues historically and/or cross-culturally,
although all papers exploring any aspect of Canada are welcomed.
Please
send paper proposals or suggestions for panels to:

Bellfy (bellfy@msu.edu) or Jefferson
