Fellowships at the Newberry
General
Description:
(Individuals interested in the fellowships program for 2004 should write
to the Center Director for an update on this program.)
This year, the Center for Great Lakes Culture
will award two fellowships in support of research pursuant
to its primary objectives: to identify, collect, study, interpret
and disseminate the cultural history and expressions of the
diverse peoples, traditions and customs of the Great Lakes
region and the region’s interactions with the world.
The Center seeks to enhance public understanding of the relevance
and relationship of such humanistic study to the examination
and understanding of public issues. These goals will be achieved
through the development, linkage, and dissemination of specific
disciplinary, cross-disciplinary, and interdisciplinary research,
teaching and public engagement activities. These activities
include research, teaching (university, K-12 curricular development,
and informal education), conferences, symposia, multimedia,
real and virtual exhibitions, festivals, and collection development.
The Center will also build on the complementary expertise
and strengths of regionally focused humanities and arts concentrations
at other cultural institutions by applying them as appropriate
to the Center’s work and public programs.
Focus areas in research, events, or creative
activities may be identified for a given year from which applications
will be especially solicited. Projects with an innovative
or significant public dimension are especially welcome. Please
check this website for on-going programs and resources. Collections
accessible at Michigan State University can be perused at
the web site of the MSU
Collections Council. Applicants with inquiries about the
contents of specific collections at MSU, please contact the
CGLC Steering Committee.
